The Story of ONE OAK Bicycles

by Founder Eric Maves
Picture
"I’ll never forget the day when I went in and traded my Ross BMX bike for a Nishiki. It wasn’t anything special but it was my first road bike. Immediately, I put a Selle Italia Turbo saddle and some gummy brake lever hoods on it to make it look just a little bit more “racey.” I guess that is where this idea really started."

Who is Eric Maves?

A lifelong interest in bicycles blossomed in the mid 1980’s, discovering the Tour de France via short weekend segments on CBS and ABC telecasts.  The first of his friends to ditch a BMX bike for a road bike, Eric was soon subscribing to cycling magazines, leading to regularly wasting away study hall time in High School methodically thumbing through the pages, learning about, and lusting over bicycles and componentry of the time.  This newfound obsession also bled into course studies, with papers written on the Tour de France, Bicycle history and even a bicycle frame sculpture in Art class.

Much to the chagrin of his parents, Eric opted out of attending Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, instead spending that first school year’s room & board money on his very first Campagnolo equipped Italian racing bicycle.  Priorities.

ONE OAK Boutique

Far from a traditional bike shop, the ONE OAK Boutique is my tribute to cycling. Part museum, gallery, library, lounge....part anything the current guests want it to be. ONE OAK Boutique is a place for cyclists to hang out, learn, teach, share, and grow the community. While many of the bikes in the boutique are for sale, several bikes from my personal collection are also on display.

Every bicycle in the ONE OAK Boutique is curated, custom and most importantly, one of a kind. If you come in and fall in love with a finished bike, only to find out it's not in your size (or budget), I will work with you to create a different yet similar one-of-a-kind bike to match your needs, preferences, and style. If there is a vintage bike you always wanted to buy but never did, I can help locate one or source the necessary frame & parts and build to fulfill old dreams.

The Velo Lounge

Bikes are a big purchase and I understand that. Not everyone is constantly in the market for a new bike. For those not in the market, I built the Velo Lounge as a place to hang out and share your love for cycling. The Velo Lounge is open to anyone to come in and enjoy. From books to art to cycling memorabilia, there is something here for everyone to enjoy. Have a complimentary Nespresso coffee or Peroni beer while you hang out.  Meet other cyclists, learn from them, teach them, and help grow Madison's cycling community.

Various group rides and events are being planned for the future. Check back to find out what is coming down the road...
